Redefining Possibilities Through Data Science, Inspired by Purpose

Abstract

This blog highlights Michael Ochola's pathway into data science and his work within the Data Science Without Borders (DSWB) initiative. Drawing on early interests in computing and an initial role building a web application for longitudinal population studies, he reflects on how foundational skills in data quality assessment and probability-based thinking shaped his approach to applied analytics. Through DSWB, he has expanded his technical and leadership capacities, collaborating with peers across Africa and supporting training workshops that strengthen collective learning. He describes how data science has enabled practical solutions for integrating disparate datasets, including the development of a central data warehouse and ETL pipelines to harmonize multi-site longitudinal mental health data for analysis and visualization. The blog also highlights applied model development, such as predictive tools that improved operational efficiency and reduced risk in a digital lending context. Overall, it presents data science as a means to strengthen evidence generation, improve research systems, and expand access to African data for future innovation.
