Abstract
This chapter examines the complex challenges faced by residents of informal settlements and slums across African cities, focusing on how rapid urbanization creates persistent vulnerabilities in living conditions, infrastructure, and health outcomes. Drawing on case studies from urban centers such as Nairobi, Lagos, and Dar es Salaam, the authors analyze key determinants of poor healthincluding overcrowding, inadequate water and sanitation, housing insecurity, and exposure to environmental hazards. The chapter explores both communicable and non?communicable disease burdens, highlighting elevated risks of diarrheal diseases, respiratory infections, HIV, malnutrition, and chronic illnesses. It also addresses themes of social inequity, tenure insecurity, and lack of service provision. The authors argue for inclusive policies, participatory planning, and targeted interventions to drive health equity in urban informal settings across the continent.
