This fact sheet, published by the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) for World Breastfeeding Week 2025, details the critical state of breastfeeding in Kenya. While Kenya has made significant progress increasing exclusive breastfeeding rates from 13% in 2003 to 60% in 2022 rates have recently plateaued. The document highlights systemic barriers such as inadequate maternity leave and unsupportive workplaces, particularly for women in the informal sector. It advocates for a "village" approach through community health volunteers and explores innovative solutions like human milk banks to support vulnerable infants. Ultimately, it serves as a call to action for stronger legal enforcement and workplace transformations to protect breastfeeding as a public health priority.
