Inside the Maze Women Face: The Reality of Unsafe Abortion in Togo

Abstract

This executive summary presents findings from a qualitative ethnographic study examining the lived experiences of adolescent girls and women in Togo who face unintended pregnancies and unsafe abortions. Conducted in the Plateaux and Grand Lom� regions, the study draws on personal testimonies and interviews with 61 participants, as well as stakeholders, to reveal the complex interplay of stigma, legal restrictions, economic vulnerability, and inadequate sexuality education that shape decisions around abortion. The report highlights the prevalence of unsafe abortion�estimated at 60,000 cases annually�its severe health consequences, and the barriers to accessing safe abortion and post-abortion care. The study documents the urgent need for legal reform, improved healthcare quality, comprehensive sexuality education, and better access to reproductive health services to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity in Togo.
