Abstract

This publication highlights the persistent crisis of child marriage and sexual and gender-based violence affecting adolescent girls in Turkana County, Kenya. Despite progressive national laws and child protection frameworks, many girls continue to experience early marriage, teenage pregnancy, and violence rooted in poverty, harmful cultural norms, climate shocks, and weak enforcement of existing laws. The article draws on findings from a situational analysis under the ANeSA initiative, showing how structural inequalities, limited access to health and protection services, and fragmented referral systems leave many girls vulnerable and unsupported. It also underscores how community norms and economic pressures such as bride price and survival strategies during drought perpetuate the practice of child marriage. At the same time, the publication identifies promising interventions, including integrated education support programs, economic strengthening initiatives, safe spaces for girls, and community-led efforts such as alternative rites of passage. These approaches demonstrate that coordinated, multi-sectoral action can reduce child marriage and improve girls' wellbeing. The article calls for stronger enforcement of child protection laws, expanded access to services, improved education opportunities, and enhanced coordination across sectors to ensure sustainable protection of girls' rights and futures.
