| dc.description.abstract | This learning brief examines the integration of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) prevention and survivor care into routine health systems, focusing on the Model Health Facility (MHF) established at Nairegie Enkare Level IV Hospital in Narok County, Kenya. Narok County, with a high prevalence of FGM, was selected as a demonstration site for embedding FGM prevention and response within maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) services. The approach involved training healthcare workers and community health promoters, integrating FGM screening and counselling into routine clinical touchpoints, and leveraging medical student placements to increase workforce capacity and community outreach. Key outcomes included increased service uptake, improved patient experience, enhanced technical and soft skills among providers, and strengthened community trust. The model also fostered social change by empowering women and engaging youth as role models. Challenges identified include workforce continuity, limited male engagement, and resource constraints for scaling up training. The brief concludes that integrating FGM prevention into routine health services is effective and scalable, provided there is sustained government ownership, facility-level quality improvement, and strengthened training pipelines. | en_US |
