This qualitative exploratory study examined community perceptions of positive masculinities and the role of male engagement in preventing violence against women and girls (VAWG) in South Sudan. Conducted in Juba City, the study gathered perspectives from policymakers, community leaders, programme beneficiaries, and community members using key informant interviews, focus group discussions, and in-depth interviews. The findings demonstrate that traditional masculine ideals coexist with emerging concepts of positive masculinity emphasizing respect, gender equality, emotional intelligence, and non-violence. The study identified entrenched gender norms, resistance to gender equality initiatives, limited funding, and competing demands on men's time as barriers to promoting positive masculinities. Effective approaches included community dialogues, engagement of traditional and religious leaders, male role models, sports and vocational activities, and the Engaging Men through Accountable Practices (EMAP) programme. The report provides recommendations for strengthening gender-transformative interventions and policies that promote male engagement in ending violence against women and girls in South Sudan.en_US
