Roles of Positive Masculinities and Male Engagement in the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls in Malawi

Abstract

This qualitative exploratory study examined the role of positive masculinities and male engagement in preventing violence against women and girls (VAWG) in Malawi. Conducted in Machinga District between July and December 2023, the study involved policymakers, community leaders, programme beneficiaries, and community members through key informant interviews, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions. The findings show that traditional masculinity remains influential but is increasingly complemented by positive masculinity characterized by respect, compassion, non-violence, shared decision-making, and gender equality. The study identified cultural norms, poverty, inadequate funding, and limited male participation as key barriers to eliminating VAWG, while community dialogue, male champions, traditional and religious leaders, and gender-transformative interventions such as the Barbershop Toolbox were identified as effective strategies for engaging men and boys. The report provides evidence-based recommendations for strengthening positive masculinity interventions and informing policies aimed at ending violence against women and girls in Malawi.
