Abstract
A CARTA Fellow is leading Uganda’s clinical trial on Lenacapavir, a groundbreaking twice-yearly injectable HIV prevention drug that is showing significant promise in reducing new HIV infections. The study represents a major advancement in HIV prevention efforts, particularly among populations at high risk of infection, by offering a long-acting alternative to daily oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Conducted in Uganda as part of broader regional and global efforts, the trial highlights Africa’s growing contribution to cutting-edge health research and innovation. The initiative also demonstrates the critical role of African researchers and institutions in generating locally driven evidence to address persistent public health challenges. The findings from the trial could transform HIV prevention strategies by improving adherence, reducing stigma associated with daily medication, and accelerating progress toward ending AIDS as a public health threat.
