A Research Guide for Conducting an Exploratory Qualitative Study on the Roles of Positive Masculinities and Male Engagement in the Ending of Violence Against Women and Girls in Africa

Abstract

This research guide provides a comprehensive framework for designing and implementing qualitative exploratory studies on positive masculinities and male engagement in ending violence against women and girls (VAWG) across Africa. Developed through collaboration among the African Population and Health Research Center, the Centre for Social Research at the University of Malawi, The Sudd Institute, and the United Nations Population Fund, the guide outlines best practices for protocol development, ethical considerations, participant recruitment, data collection, analysis, dissemination, and research management. It includes a sample qualitative study protocol and practical tools that can be adapted to different country contexts. The guide is intended to support researchers, programme implementers, and institutions in generating high-quality evidence to strengthen gender-transformative interventions, policy development, and programming for the elimination of violence against women and girls.
