Abstract

This publication explores how digital innovation is being used to improve youth mental health in Kenya by expanding access to information, support, and early intervention services for young people facing increasing mental health and substance use challenges. It highlights the development and deployment of technology-enabled solutions such as mobile applications, AI-supported tools, and community-based digital platforms that provide mental health literacy, screening, and behavioural support, particularly for adolescents in underserved and informal settlement contexts. The article underscores how stigma, limited mental health infrastructure, and gaps in service delivery continue to hinder timely care, while digital tools are helping bridge these gaps by offering scalable, accessible, and youth-friendly interventions. It further emphasizes the importance of integrating research, community engagement, and cross-sector partnerships to ensure these innovations are culturally relevant, effective, and sustainable in improving mental wellbeing among young people.
