Report: Individual Views and Actions, and Public Perceptions Towards Sexual and Gender Minorities in Kenya

Abstract

Sexual and gender minorities (also known as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual and gender diverse [LGBTQ+]) people in Africa face the risks of stigma, prejudice, and violence. While there is a rise in tolerance of LBGTQ+ people in several African countries, harsh anti-homosexuality laws persist, and intolerance towards this already marginalized community is increasing in countries in eastern Africa, including Kenya. The LGBTQ+ landscape in Kenya is complicated. While same-sex sexual relations are illegal, Kenya is also a signatory to several international and continental human rights instruments that guarantee LGBTQ+ rights as human rights. Since 2009 when HIV prevalence was highest among key population including men who have sex with men, there has been an increase in the visibility LGBTQ+ groups. Such visibility portends gains and disadvantages to LGBTQ+ organizations and persons. While LGBTQ+ people live in and interact with wider society, it is worth exploring further these interactions to inform inclusive laws and policies.
