Abstract
This learning brief summarizes findings from a study evaluating the impact of the Jengu handwashing facility in promoting handwashing with soap among crisis-affected populations in Kyangwali Refugee Settlement, Uganda. Implemented between March and July 2024, the study showed improvements in handwashing behavior, soap and water availability, and a reduction in diarrheal cases among children. The intervention was well received, and the Jengu unit proved durable and acceptable. Key lessons highlight the importance of accessibility, user-centered design, local capacity, and integrated hygiene promotion in humanitarian WASH programming.
